At the outset, it should be understood that naturopathy does not believe in any kind of medicines as they only suppress the disease and produce harmful side effects instead.
When pain in the back manifests suddenly, the first step to be taken is to shift the patient to a firm bed with 2" or 3" thick cotton or foam mattress, but not to an absolute hard one. Let the patient relax completely on the bed with minimum movements. In most of the spinal related problems, bed-rest helps the best.
For years, doctors prescribed hard mattresses for back pain sufferers because of the conventional medical thought that states that hard beds help to reduce and eliminate back pain. However, modern researches have shown that hard mattresses could do far less good than softer beds.
Even after the contemporary researches, 75 percent of orthopedic physicians still recommend a firm mattress because of the same old medical understanding of back pain. A study published in The Lancet Today totally rejects such orthodoxies.
Researches conducted in Spain showed that patients who slept on a firm mattress suffered a lot more lower-back pain in bed and during the day than those on a firm mattress. The reason researchers describe for that is bearing less pressure of the shoulders and hips on the softer mattresses than that on the harder ones and thus allowing patients to sleep more naturally resulting in low to no pain during the day.
This studies conducted in Spain are the first of its kind and have the potential to change the opinions of many doctors making them advise patients with the troubling back to sleep on a softer mattress. |
