  Pregnancy Back Pain

The following causes may precipitate backache among women.

(a) Improper Evacuation of Womb Lining

Each month, the cells which build up the lining of the womb, grow under hormonal control. If no egg is fertilised, the lining breaks down and the discharge of the cells from the womb produces a monthly bleeding or menstruation.

When this expulsion is not complete and the lining of the womb remains there, the blood cannot escape, resulting in considerable amount of pain, which can render backache.

(b) Weakness of Muscles and Ligaments Supporting the Womb Normally

The womb or the uterus sits in the abdomen, with only the cervix projecting down into the vagina. The womb is kept in position by a network of muscles and ligaments. If these supports get weakened for any reason-like bearing many children, as is the most common cause, it may result in backache.

Apart from childbirth, other contributory factors include menopause (which results in hormonal changes), obesity (which puts a direct, physical strain on the tissues of the spine), lifting of heavy loads (which can strain and weaken the muscles, if not done properly), and violent coughing or sneezing (which increases the pressure on the abdomen). All these could lead to a prolapse. If the prolapse is slight, special pelvic floor muscle exercises may help. Alternatively, a ring pessary-designed to hold the womb in position may be the answer. However, if the prolapse is severe, surgery may be needed to repair the tissues.

Dealing with Back Pain during Pregnancy:

Back pain during pregnancy is common. However, it should not be accepted as normal during pregnancy. Addressing and managing back pain throughout pregnancy help make the delivery an easier and pleasant experience. Otherwise, it can be an extremely painful experience. Furthermore, if left unaddressed, back pain, especially the lower back pain, during pregnancy can cause post partum back pain (pain after birth). That’s why it is strongly suggested to pregnant women that they seek treatment for back pain during pregnancy.
